  • Intensive Science Research Experience (CH200, January Term 2017)

Where & When

  • Lecture: Science Hall 208 @ 9:00am MWF
  • Laboratory: arranged with research mentor

Materials

Research materials will be chosen based on the students project in consultation with  their research mentor.  All students should bring a notebook to serve as their laboratory notebook.

Assignments & Grading

  1. Presentation during Weekly Group Meeting – Students will provide increasingly polished research presentations that provide an project significance, background, methods, results, and discussion.
  2. Laboratory / Research Notebook – Students will learn to properly document research.
  3. Blog Journal – Students will reflect on various readings and their research experience.
  4. Reflective Summary on Research – Students will provide a final overview of their research along with a reflection on the research experience.
  5. Science in Popular Media & Research Paper Presentation – In two separate assignments, students will read and summarize peer reviewed science in two different formats.

Research is always an adventure.  Make sure to keep in contact with your research adviser and the course instructor.

Academic Conduct

Please refer to the  Loras College Academic Honesty Policy.  Cheating not only disrespects the college, your instructor, and you fellow students, but yourself as well.  I expect you to work together often, but cheating is any “[b]ehavior in which a deliberately fraudulent misrepresentation is employed in an attempt to gain underserved intellectual credit, either for oneself or for another person.  Students are required to actively protect their work against misuse by others (lending tests, projects, term papers).”

Make-up Policy

You must notify me  at minimum 1 day any the absence if you want to make up the work.  Daily quizzes cannot be made up.  Exams will not be given any other time except for unforeseen emergency.
