Syllabus

What

  • General Chemistry (CH111, Section 1-3, Fall 2019)

The official description of the course is provided in the Loras College Undergraduate Bulletin.  We will be covering the introductory concepts in chemistry, which will give you a solid foundation for moving on to more advanced courses in chemistry and in other majors (i.e. engineering, biology, biochemistry, etc).  The course has both a theoretical (class) and hands-on (lab) component.  Beyond the ideas, skills, and broad concepts, there will be a strong focus in the course on learning skills.  How we will achieve this is detailed in the course philosophy.  We will discuss specific course goals and outcomes together.

Where & When

  • Lecture (M-F) Science Hall 208 @ 8:00am (Section 1), 10:00am (Section 2), and 1:30pm (Section 3)
  • Recitation (M) 5:00PM – 7:00PM, Science Hall 128

Staff

  • Lecturer – Dr. Adam Moser (adam.moser@loras.edu , Science Hall 213) & Dr. Tina Edwards (christina.edwards@loras.edu , Science Hall 214) ,
    • Office Hours: drop in or by appointment
  • SI Leaders – TBA
    • SI Sessions: TBA

Materials

  1. “Chemistry” Burdge 4th Edition, eBook (loose leaf optional).
  2. ALEKS tutoring system (purchased online).Course code: LTLMJ-9KMTQ
  3. Lab goggles and lab manual (will be sold during lab)
  4. Lab notebook (sold at bookstore)

Grading

  1. Daily quizzes (20%) – Coming prepared to class each day is essential to being successful.  Each lecture will begin with a short (2-4 minutes) quiz.  This quiz will cover the material we will be discussing in class not what we worked on in the last lecture.
  2. Laboratory (10%) – Hands on skills are essential in chemistry.  The laboratory will consist of weekly activities with a lab report write up.
  3. ALEKS (15%) – ALEKS is designed to help you master the basic skills of chemistry.  You can read about ALEKS in detail here.
  4. Exams (10% x 4) – There will be four exams during the semester.  Each exam will test your ability to use your knowledge, not just repeat it.  See the calendar below for dates.
  5. Final Exam (15%) – The final exam will be a cumulative assessment over the entire semester.

With a valid excuse, daily quizzes can be taken in advance of class.  There will be no make-up exams or individual extensions on ALEKS.

Laboratory

Specific details for laboratory will be given during lab time.  If a student fails 3 labs, they will automatically receive a failing grade (F) in the course.

Schedule

Our goal this semester will be to cover the topics in chapters 1-11 and 13 of our textbook.  The calendar below has the exam dates, class readings, etc.
